Should people receive training on all modes as part of driver training?

David Levinger wrote me single line this late last night, Washington D.C. time. .  I am turning this terrific question around in the back of my mind today and invite you to do the same.

PS. Perhaps something like or close to this exists in some part of the world today. If so it would be great to know about it so that we can provide coverage in the pages of World Streets and our Equity/Transport program (that kind of training being, after all, a form of equity).

  1. Hi Eric, interesting question. Training of different modes as part of a driver training is maybe difficult to achieve. But it’s good to give eduction/training of different modes at different ages or target groups. In the Netherlands children at primary schools get traffic lessons. Our company developed more specific lessons about different modes. Like a public transport program (PT4U) or cycling training program (Biking4U) for children at the age of 10/12 year. The same you can do for elderly, training how to use public transport or how to cycle safe. See below for more specifics.

  2. Curiously, a small group here in Portugal, started a petition asking for mandatory cycling lessons for anyone taking it’s driving licence. Although I don’t agree with the petition, I can sympathize with it’s objective. But as Michiel said, I believe that education/training of different modes at different ages is much more feasible and more useful.
